The Hawaii Forest Institute invites the public to a traditional Hawaiian hale-building workshop from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. May 16 at Panaewa Zoo Rainforest &Gardens.
Using materials from the aina surrounding Panaewa, certified traditional Hawaiian hale builder Unko Waltah will teach participants this unique skill and help construct a traditional hale at the zoo.
A $5 fee per person helps cover the cost of lunch and drinks. Space is limited. The zoo is at 800 Stainback Highway in Hilo.
